History In Otaki
The early days of Peter Black Industries began in 1971 when Peter Black bought an old
business,‘The Wellington Brace Manufacturing Company’ located in Upper Cuba Street,

The business was moved to Manakau village near Levin, in a former grocery shop where
leather belts were made for the trade, Institutions and Govt. contracts. Further products
were developed into the 80’s.

The 1987 deregulation era closed many doors and imports from Asia had a serious
impact on his trade, so in 1991 Peter relocated to a purpose built factory and retail shop in Otaki on State Highway One, only 10kms south of Manakau.

By the late 90’s all but one NZ bovine tannery had closed down due to soaring imports.

Alternative tanneries were found in Italy so the Otaki shop could offer the finest full
grain leather belts made in the factory, just behind the shop, thereby maintaining the
highest quality, durable belts for both Ladies and Men.
In Otaki
The Black & Co Leatherbelts Factory and Shop is easily found in the middle of Otaki’s booming shopping precinct.

Otaki is a small and historic coastal town on the western side of the North Island on the beautiful Kapiti Coast, just 1 hour’s drive from Wellington.

The once sleepy railway township is now a hive of retail activity where visitors flock to grab an outlet bargain or pick up something special from the many boutique shops.

Ideally situated halfway between the sea and Tararua ranges, families come to shop, eat, and then go to the beach for a swim and/or gather pippis. Heading east to the hills, there are places for picnicking, walking and biking or there is river rafting for the more adventurous.

Many Artists and Artisans live in the area and local wines, bread, oils and of course, Quality Leather Belts are available for the discerning buyer.
